Well thought out post, and very true. All countries have some past they are not proud of, and many try to gloss over them in their history books, or change history in the books altogether. Judge a country on its accomplishments, its equality under the law, it fairness to all its citizens, its education policies, its openness to science and new ideas. That is the basis for future greatness or stagnation.

Indeed. Many people seem keen to accept a mythic understanding of this group or that's past and present, rather than try to wrap their heads around the nuances of a properly historical understanding.
