« The Carnival of Islam in the West I | Main | Austrolabe: Seeing Jews beyond our own shortcomings »

September 09, 2006

In my probationary year as a teacher, I was at a 99% Muslim State school, with about 10% Muslim staff (better proportion than some!) Then one new teacher approached me on the subject of praying Zuhr - this was before the UK employment regulations on this issue had been even thought of!

When I told the (non-Muslim) Head what my colleague had suggested, she took this teacher to one side and told never to mention such a thing in front of any of the non-Muslim teachers. Just as I had, sadly. We both knew such a suggestion would have caused a near-riot on the part of most non-Muslim staff.

Why? Islamophobia, quite simply. As I'm sure Judeophobia informed the response in the above mentioned debacle.
