'Islamic' rap, 'jihad'-style

This story appeared in last week's Observer.

"It's rap, jihad-style. A music video with blood-curdling images, fronted by a young British Muslim rapper brandishing a gun and a Koran is the latest hit in radical Islamic circles.

"The video has recently been posted on the British website run by the Islamic extremist Mohammed al-Massari, the UK-based Saudi Arabian dissident who has lived in Britain since 1994. Al-Massari claims that the video has been selling in large quantities at mosques to the younger generation and is in heavy demand overseas."

At first, it was thought that this was an Ali G spoof.

Now, I don't know about any other Muslim who visits their local, or any other, mosque especially in the United Kingdom; but al-Massari's claim that "the video has been selling in large quantities at mosques to the younger generation" seems like an empty boast. For starters, The Official UK Charts Company haven't verified this claim. Further, I can usually end up visiting several mosques during the week, but it was only when I opened the newspaper that morning that I discovered anything about this rap. Has anyone seen people selling it in mosques? More on this below.

The video starts off with "images of US marines in Iraq cheering as one of them shoots a wounded Iraqi lying on the floor." But the last time I looked Iraqis seem to be bearing the brunt of the so-called 'jihad' in Iraq, right now. Perhaps the next 'hit' from the Soul Salah Crew (the cabal who produced this) will feature images of Iraqis strewn across streets, a hand here, a leg there and so on. But I wouldn't hold that proverbial breath.

Finally,

"[a]l-Massari did not see a problem in using Western music and MTV-like images to sell a message of jihad. He said that it was an effective way of attracting young Muslims who had been put off by other Islamic sects such as the Taliban [1], which banned music and dancing. 'I do not know of any young Muslim who has not either seen or got this video. It is selling everywhere. Everyone I meet at the mosque is asking for it.'

"Al-Massari denied that the messages in the video incited Muslims to take part in terrorist attacks against the West.

"He said: 'I believe the lyrics are only metaphorical. It is not like this is a fatwa.'"

I know lots of young Muslims. No one has, so far, reported seeing this. Of course, my experience isn't a subsitute for a rigorous excercise in collecting data. But then neither is al-Massari's. It's simply a case of al-Massari's word against mine. Oh, but I forgot: I doubt I can say anything that would sell newspapers.

And, moving back to the issue of the 'rap video', I thought music and images were 'prohibited' in Islam? Going back to the earlier comments of the selling of this video in mosques, I thought the mosque was a place of worship to the Almighty, and not a market? And why are they selling these videos? Doesn't that look suspiciously like a free-market enterprise? I thought imitation of 'the kuffar' was discouraged, and, unless I'm mistsken, rap music has no Islamic proof; or does it? How about the name of the group who produced this rap, the So Salah Crew ('Salah' is the ritual prayer the Muslim is obigated to perform five times a day); isn't that derogatory to Muslims? Associating the prayer, the most important act a Muslim can perform, with an art 'inspired by the devil' (as I was once told about music)?

But what are "principles", if nothing but obstacles in a propoganda war?

And another thing: I thought ta'wil was considered 'deviated'?

(By the way, in case you're confused, this isn't a fatwa either.)

i came across the same article quite recently, and was similarly surprised. generally, if something like this happens, you know muslims will begin forwarding emails like, "what's going on?" whereas there were none.

reminds me of a recent khutbah in which the khateeb railed on western dress as a source of doom for muslims. wonder what he thought of shalwar kameez, many of which are made from cloth imported from other (non-muslim) countries? the whole idea of a jihad rap...

its just quite disturbing, on many levels.

Your comments on 'Western dress' are interesting: 'trousers' are said to be Ottoman in origin (though a fact check is needed there, I think).

Many a time I've seen a young khateeb, fully bearded, fully robed, firm in his faith, standing up delivering diatribes against 'the West', in all its forms.

Only to walk out of the prayer hall, and slip on his brand-new, expensive, cream and blue Nike's (Cortez, akhi), while revealing that underneath his robe are an equally expensive pair of Catepillar combats (beige) and an extravagent Timberland jumper (pure wool, bro).

Re: the problem you mentioned, its a big problem here, because many scholars become "scholars" (that is, imams and khateebs) becuase it pays the bills. so they have no motivation, other than salary, which is dismal, which retards any possible motivation...

I've no dispute with the first point.

The third point, though, I do dispute very much as inhumane. Likewise, the fourth point strikes me as exceptionally problematic, particularly inasmuch as it's frequently an excuse for misogyny and the subordination of women, and whenever they're able (i.e. in Western societies) Muslim women fight against it.

As for the second point, well, forgive me (or not, I don't much care) if I'd much rather you not murdering me.

to kill renegades. Rejecting Islam takes courage. Peace, love and freedom,is the only hope for mankind. Choice!

Ultimately, that’s all that really matters. Not good deeds, certainly not jihad, not prayer, ritual, religion,

fear, fasting, pilgrimages, taxes, or prophets.“God, I’m a sinner. Thank you for sacrificing yourself so that I

might know you. I accept your gift of eternal life. Thanks for forgiving me. Please reveal yourself so that I

might understand who you are and what you want.”

This attack is just one more crime by a muslim in Europe. It's viewed as an isolated incident. Europe wake up.

A filmmaker who is a relative of the painter Vincent van Gogh was slain in an Amsterdam street Tuesday after

receiving death threats over a movie he made criticizing the treatment of women under Islam.

A suspect, a 26-year-old man with dual Dutch-Moroccan nationality, was arrested after a shootout with

officers that left him wounded, police said.
Filmmaker Theo van Gogh had been threatened after the August airing of the movie "Submission," which he made with

a right-wing Dutch politician who had renounced the Islamic faith of her birth.

Police said Van Gogh's killer shot and stabbed his victim and left a note on his body. They declined to comment

on reports that Van Gogh's neck was slashed. ...

One unidentified witness who lives in the neighborhood told the Dutch national broadcaster NOS that she heard six

shots and saw a man with a long beard and wearing Islamic garb concealing a gun.

Another witness told Dutch Radio 1 the killer arrived by bicycle and shot Van Gogh as he got out of a car. "The

shooter stayed next to him and waited. Waited to make sure he was dead," the witness said. ...

In a written statement, Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende said, "Nothing is known about the motive. Police

declined to comment on the possible motive

He had a particularly strong appeal amongst the young.

European Leftists are starting to find out that islamic hate does not spare them. German feminist-leftist Alice

A HATE CRIME IN JERSEY CITY HEIGHTS

Have you read about that Egyptian Christian family of four murdered in Jersey City Heights two days ago?

The New York Post reports today that the father was an outspoken critic of Islamists:

Hossam Armanious, 47, who along with his wife and two daughters was found stabbed to death in his Jersey City

home early Friday, would regularly debate religion in a Middle Eastern chat room, one source said.
Armanious, an Egyptian Christian, was well known for expressing his Coptic beliefs and engaging in fiery back-

and-forth with Muslims on the Web site paltalk.com.

He "had the reputation for being one of the most outspoken Egyptian Christians," said the source, who had close

ties to the family.

The source, who had knowledge of the investigation, refused to specify the anti-Muslim statement. But he said

cops told him they were looking into the exchanges as a possible motive.

The married father of two had recently been threatened by Muslim members of the Web site, said a fellow Copt and

store clerk who uses the chat room.

"You'd better stop this bull---- or we are going to track you down like a chicken and kill you," was the threat,

said the clerk, who was online at the time and saw the exchange...

Armanious' fervor apparently rubbed off on his daughter, Sylvia ? who would have turned 16 yesterday. "She was

very religious and very opinionated," said Jessica Cimino, 15, a fellow sophomore at Dickenson HS.

A family member who viewed photos of the bloodbath said Sylvia seemed to have taken the most savage punishment.

"When we saw the pictures, you could tell that they were hurt really, really bad in the face; especially Sylvia,"

you can ask that question even to a 3 year old who is a muslim. we hate Jews because they swear words to Allah

(God). they kill infants just because they are muslims, they dont allow muslims to even pray at their mosques,

they kill family members of a any muslim family, they break homes, and most of all their religion is against

ours. thats why if you ever travelled to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, U.A.E, and Oman, Jews and Israelis

are forbidden to enter their lands from how much we gulf people hate them. If you ever walk down the streets of

Kuwait you can hear children at the age of probably 6 or 7 swearing to jews and promising that when they grow up

they would kill them.We teenage ARABIAN MUSLIMS try to threaten any Western people in our land so that they leave

us alone. already there are teenagers at my school who have injured our teachers (they're Americans +Christians).

some teachers quit some teachers never show up. at the Elementary section in our school i find 3rd graders

talking back to their teachers and spitting on them to give them respect! imagine a 3rd grade muslim CHILD wants

respect from a 38 year old teacher! So how do you think that child will grow up? how much of the hatred will

A glimpse of the horror that took place Tuesday morning. A day of fear, loss, grief and anger. A tragedy for our

entire community Muslim and non-Muslim.

We found ourselves trying to understand, to reason, to come to grips with sights and sounds coming in over the

airwaves. But how could a disaster so immense, so unexpected, so grave - be understood ?! ........

Who could have committed such evil? What kind of soul could perpetrate such hatred?

As news came out it was clear. The blame would be placed squarely at the feat of America's Great Satan: Saudi

dissident Osama bin Laden.

Calls for restraint and care were drowned out by the lust, though understandable, for revenge. The bearded,

sweaty terrorists of every Americans worst nightmare were brought to the fore. It was simple, the enemy was one,

the enemy was us (Muslims).

But whoever the perpetrator, whoever is ultimately responsible, we must ask ourselves, "Where in the human soul

lay the source of such hatred?" "What could produce such utter desperation and disregard for life?"

Without doubt. Tuesday's events didn't appear out of a vacuum. We can never justify or rationalize such a

tragedy, but we must attempt to understand WHY !

Yesterday, I discussed this with a teacher. She also though that obscuring the lessons of this tragedy with

labels and oversimplifications would only increase the loss.

The reality is that Tuesday's tragedy, a reprehensible crime against humanity, is an expressions of years of pent

up frustration, despair, anger and resentment against the United States.

To call the attackers 'crazy', 'senseless', or 'mindless' is to miss the point. The attackers must have been

anything but. To lost sight of the context out of which such hatred could flow is to only set the stage for

greater tragedies.

If we allow ourselves the easy option of dehumanizing the attackers in our minds, as they must have dehumanized

their victims before they ended their lives, then we aid and escalate the cycle of reciprocal violence and lead

humanity to darkness beyond imagination.

Were the attackers really so much different than the average American? Retired General Norman Schwartzkopf seemed

to think so.

In a recent televised interview he said, "In Iraq we went to great length to avoid civilian casualties .. but

these bastards went after civilians. That's the difference between us and them."

But is this the truth, or is this what we'd like be believe about ourselves? In a mid-nineteen nineties

interview, CBS Reporter Lesley Stahl questioned the then US Ambassador to the UN, Madeleine Albright, on the

post-war sanctions against Iraq :
We have heard that a HALF MILLION CHILDREN HAVE DIED. I mean, That's more children that died in HIROSHIMA. And -

and you know, is the price worth it?"

Albright's reply, "I think this is very hard choice, BUT THAT PRICE - WE THINK THE PRICE IS WORTH IT."

Stahl won both an Emmy and a Dupont-Columbia journalism award for this report, but Albright's comment went

virtually unremarked in the U.S. ( Though it received considerable attention in the Middle East). Within six

months, Madeleine Albright was unanimously approved by the Senate as U.S. Secretary of State.

Price? Price? A heavy and grave price indeed that lives of FIVE HUNDRED THOUSANDS INNOCENT CHILDREN each with

dreams and hopes of their own. Aspirations for their young lives. Laughing and loving sweet things and comfort.

Loving play and being naughty just like American children.

How could we (as Americans) allow ourselves to be silent while they died? Did we turn our eyes from their

humanity and worth? Did we not indeed commit an unimaginable atrocity? ARE WE REALLY ANY DIFFERENT THAN THE

PERPETRATOR OF TUESDAYS ATTACK?

THEY CRIED TO THEIR MOTHERS FOR FOOD AND COMFORT. Mothers who could do nothing but tell them who had done this to

them. Telling them WHO HAD BEEN RESPONSIBLE for the pains in their stomachs.

What would you do if this was how your little one had died? What would you be capable of?

But America told the world that deformities the disease and death were 'WORTH THE PRICE'. No, these children were

raised not on milk, BUT ON THE BREAST OF BURNING HATE. Waiting to express itself in an unthinkable explosion of

revenge and vindication.

But let there be no question in the minds of our neighbors, coworkers and friends - The Muslim community STANDS

WITH YOU IN CONDEMNATION OF THIS OFFENSE against you. AS WE STAND WITH THE CHILDREN OF IRAQ. AS WE STAND WITH THE

DISPOSSESSED OF PALESTINE. As we stand with all who have been wronged.

Many of us know all too well the taste of lives lost. Ones whom we loved. Ones for whom we cried tears. Ones

whose joy and laughter we miss so dearly.

Robert Fisk, a well known reporter in the Independent wrote a report towards understanding this tragedy. He said

uniformed by America's Israeli ally hacking and raping and murdering their way through refugee camps ...

... And there will be, inevitably, and quite immorally, an attempt to obscure the historical wrongs and the

injustices that lie behind yesterday's firestorms. We will be told about "mindless terrorism", the "mindless" bit

being essential if we are not to realize how hated America has become in the land of the birth of three great

religions.
Ask an Arab how he responds to 20,000 or 30,000 innocent deaths and he or she will respond as decent people

should, that it is an unspeakable crime. But they will ask why WE DID NOT USE SUCH WORDS ABOUT THE SANCTIONS THAT

HAVE DESTROYED THE LIVES PERHAPS HALF A MILLION CHILDREN IN IRAQ, WHY WE DID NOT RAGE ABOUT THE SEVENTEEN

THOUSANDS CIVILIANS KILLED IN ISRAEL'S 1982 INVASION OF LEBANON. And those basic reasons why the Middle East

caught fire last September the Israeli occupation of Arab land, the dispossession of Palestinians, the

bombardments and state-sponsored executions .. all these must be obscured lest they provide the smallest

fractional reason for yesterday's mass savagery.

Eight years ago, I helped to make a television series that tried to explain why so many Muslims had come to hate

the West. Last night, I remembered some of those Muslims in that film, their families burnt by American-made

bombs and weapons. They talked about how no one would help them but God.
Theology versus technology, the suicide bomber against the nuclear power. Now we have learnt what this means"

So what are the lessons to be learned from this great disaster?
We must work towards greater mutual understanding. We must listen to each other. We must humanize one another,

and this cannot be done at a distance. We cannot afford let bombs teach this moment.
Are we not all God's creatures? Do we not all have stomachs, feel cold, feel pain, and need comfort?
Do we not all deserve to be secure from harm and dispossession?

It is imperative that the Muslims join together as one, for it is through this joining that the Almighty and Wise

shall make us strong. It's them imperative that we set our course unto spreading understanding and Mercy. And

neutralizing enmity, hate and ignorance.
